Last night I was helping Deanna with her homework. By phone, of course, since she is 1600 miles away from me. She was writing a dream resume and had decided that she was a Web Designer. So, she put together a resume. She had that she graduated Washington State University with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science. She was valevictorian (that was my idea ;-) and she had all this web design experience.

My thoughts on this is that I wish it were so easy. I've been putting together my "real" resume and it doesn't seem so impressive. No Bachelors degree in Computer Science. No web design experience. I do have adoption experience. I do have experience as a Executive Office Administrator at Boeing, but no degree. Too bad I couldn't make one up that easily.

I have been giving the opportunity to attend college. Because I am a dislocated worker, the county will give me $3500 towards college tuition and also let me be on unemployment while I go. I know that does not cover it all, but thats ok. However, I have to tell them what I want to go to school for in the next 30 days. I have to talk to 3 people that are doing that job and get their opinion and also talk to 3 colleges that offer those courses. The only problem is, I don't know what I want to do. Its a great opportunity to do something different if I could only make some decisions. I've always had a hard time with decisions. Too many variables to be concrete. I'm thinking the best thing to do is get something that takes 2 years or less. Any ideas of some great careers that don't take years and years of college?

Today we received an e-mail from a local golf course with their golfing specials, etc. It said that they needed a beverage golf cart driver. I think that sounds fun. I'm sure the pay isn't that much but really, it sounds like the perfect job for me. ;-) http://playthepines.com/golf/proto/playthepines/

Get the book "What Color is My Parachute"....it's a great "figure out what you want to be/do" book and takes into account personality etc. I would recommend anything with a professional designation - if you are at all interested in the medical field you can get a 2 yr RN degree. There is also medical records etc. Another good option is to visit your local community college advising office. You can usually get an appointment relatively quickly and they are typically free. Good luck with this - I'm sure you will find something rewarding! My brother Jeff has an Associates degree in Business and works in a Masters Degree level position at Boeing - so...even though it helps to have a degree on your resume it's certainly not the only thing. Also - I think that some Universities (like Phoenix) offer credit for your work experience so with your work experience plus 2 years you might actually be able to come out with a bachelors degree (possibly even in Social work). It's certainly worth a try!

How are you with other people's teeth. You could go to dental hygiene school, i think it's only a 2 year program, and they make good money!

Don't get discouraged. I am just now 1/2 way through my Masters. Find someone you enjoy and excel in that! You are a good person and good things will come your way. We never know why things happen until we can step back and see the good!! Keep your chin up!

Good luck! That would be so hard for me! I've dabbled in a lot of "things" but never had a "career" except for "domestic engineer & professional MOM"....LOL!
I honestly don't know what I would choose if I *had* to do something.

That's a tough one, Donna! I've often thought about going back to school, but for what? That is a tough decision. I think what Jenee said about finding something you love and going for it is the best advice. Good luck and hope to hear what you've decided!:) We're fine in San Antonio area just waiting out this hurricane before we go home. Thanks for thinking about us!:) I updated my blog with picts. of our time here.:) Miss ya!

Funny, I was just thinking the other day what my "dream" job would be. Really a mute point since 4 children (erm, 5) are my job. I think I would LOVE photography, and this is something you are so good at! Although I don't know how easy that field is to break into... I see my mom had the same idea.

Sylvia took a tax course at Liberty Tax a couple of years ago sort of 'on a whim' and it has turned into quite a wonderful thing for her. She loves it. I think it sounds terrrribly dull but she thinks it's fascinating. She had no trouble with the computer part, which was her main concern.
Liberty Tax gives free tax courses around Thanksgiving time. I'm sure H&R Block does the same.
Being good with people - and very patient - helps a lot because people can be very worried at tax time!!
And if all else failed you could wear the statue-of-liberty costume and wave and dance by the street for eight bucks an hour !!! (just kidding)
It's only Jan-April but during 'off-season' there's other tax things you can branch off and do...
