A close call.

Well, I guess it was bound to happen.  That moment when you realize that it does happen quickly.  Luckily, I won this round.

I went down to the wash to set up the trail camera.  Actually a stupid idea. It was getting dark and I wanted to have it out before it was too dark.  I went down the trail and walked across the open area.  I did watch for snakes the whole time.  I was standing at the spot, looking at my camera settings when I heard a shaking sound.  I look down, and there at my feet was a very angry rattlesnake.  I MEAN RIGHT THERE.

He was coiled up and shaking his tail at me.  His head was weaving around and he looked really mad.  At that moment, I could see the triangle shape of its head. It was pretty interesting.  I just stood really still.

The snake was backing away so I didn't think it would help if I yelled for Jim.  The last thing I needed was him running down here and getting bitten.  The snake finally retreated over the bank into the wash.  Whew.

I then went about putting up our trail camera.

I walked carefully up to the house.  Went inside.  Took a deep breath and said "Wow, I just about got bit by a snake".

I wont tell you Jims reaction...but he jumped on the quad and went down there looking for it.  Long gone.

I think this was a wake up call for me.  I've been tromping all around down there and not really paying attention.  No more running the trails in the morning till fall.

Oh yikes!! How scary! I was walking on a trail nearby a couple weeks ago and encountered a snake coming out of the bushes. Not sure what it was, but I snapped a picture for a future blog. So thankful I saw it as I had our dog with us and it would've been all over in a flash! Not looking forward to dealing with copperheads and timber rattlers in SC!!!

Wow... I think packing a pistol is definitely the route I would go. You don't want to miss out on exploring because of the fear of not being able to address the aggressive and slightly deadly inhabitants of the desert nearby.

Love your adventures and am very, very glad this one ended the way it did.
